Last Wednesday, a special books donation ceremony was held in Tokyo to support Sri Lankan prisoners in Japan. This initiative, organized by the Sri Lanka Festival Committee, aimed to provide much-needed reading materials for Sri Lankan inmates held in various prisons across Japan.
The leader of the Sri Lanka Festival Committee, Mr. Jitendra Samarawikrama, along with committee members, presented the collection of Sri Lankan books to the President of the Sri Lanka Business Council of Japan (SLBCJ). According to the Sri Lanka Embassy, there are currently 10 prisons throughout Japan where Sri Lankan nationals are held, and they often lack access to reading materials. This donation will help bridge that gap, offering these individuals a connection to their culture and language.
The books will be handed over to the Sri Lanka Embassy, which will manage the distribution across the prisons. This thoughtful contribution was made possible thanks to the efforts of several key individuals and organizations. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Naveen Chandrasekhara, who carefully selected the books from Sri Lanka, and Mr. Chandika Perera, who coordinated the transportation of the books from Sri Lanka to Japan.
Special thanks are also due to the Sri Lanka Festival Committee for their financial contributions, which made this meaningful donation possible. Their dedication and support have ensured that Sri Lankan inmates in Japan will have access to valuable reading materials, fostering a sense of connection and comfort during their time away from home.

東京で日本の刑務所にスリランカの書籍を寄贈する式典が開催
先週の水曜日、日本にいるスリランカ人受刑者を支援するために、特別な書籍寄贈式典が東京で開催されました。スリランカフェスティバル委員会が主催したこの取り組みは、日本各地の刑務所に収監されているスリランカ人受刑者に切望されている読書資料を提供することを目的としていました。
スリランカフェスティバル委員会のリーダーであるジテンドラ・サマラウィクラマ氏は、委員会メンバーとともに、スリランカの書籍コレクションをスリランカビジネス協会 (SLBCJ) の会長に贈呈しました。スリランカ大使館によると、現在、日本にはスリランカ国民が収監されている刑務所が 10 か所あり、読書資料へのアクセスが不足していることが多いとのことです。この寄贈は、そのギャップを埋め、スリランカの文化や言語とのつながりをこれらの人々に提供するのに役立つでしょう。
書籍はスリランカ大使館に引き渡され、同大使館が刑務所全体での配布を管理することになります。この思いやりのある寄付は、いくつかの重要な個人や団体の努力のおかげで実現しました。スリランカから本を慎重に選んだナビーン・チャンドラセカラ氏と、スリランカから日本への本の輸送を調整したチャンディカ・ペレラ氏に心からの感謝を申し上げます。
